Margaret Schafer, University of Illinois, Chicago

The winner of the 2023 EDD Holzheimer Memorial Student Scholarship is Margaret Shcafer from the University of Illinois, Chicago for her paper titled Attracting Climigrants to Rust Belt Cities. From droughts and heat waves to floods and wildfires, natural disasters torment the areas of the United State (U.S.) most vulnerable to climate change - yet domestic migration is leading populations to these very spots. People are leaving the Rust Belt, a region predicted to have a relatively mild climate by 2070, for southern and coastal states that experts believe may soon be uninhabitable. Margaret's research focuses on why this is happening, and how Rust Belt cities can proactively attract climate migrants. Margaret's work will be featured in a future edition of "News and Views" from the Economic Development Division.  Congratulations!
